Last week, LCCC excitedly welcomed The Year of The Snake as classrooms celebrated the beginning of Lunar New Year. Starting on January 29th, Lunar New Year - also known as Chinese New Year - is a 16 day festival to celebrate the switchover of the Lunar Calendar from the 2024 Dragon, to the 2025 Snake. The holiday concludes on February 12th and is commemorated with the Lantern Festival, all while celebrating the new zodiac sign that will be with us all year -The Snake.

Our educators do a wonderful job of integrating many holidays and celebrations of different cultures and religions to ensure their classrooms are felt as a welcoming and inclusive space for all. Celebrated by many in our centre, Lunar New Year is an exciting time for the classrooms to embrace the Chinese culture and learn about the holiday. Here are some ways our classrooms welcome The Year of The Snake:

Making Snakes

Some of our classrooms learned about the significance of the Zodiac animal for 2025, the Snake. Through books and stories, the children learned important virtues that the Snake is said to represent such as intelligence, personal growth and intuition. Afterwards, they brought their findings to life through various Snake creations.

Sensory Snakes

Other classrooms led with various sensory, dramatic and literary activities to help the children scaffold the things learned surrounding Lunar New Year, to how it can be represented and celebrated in daily life and fun.

One room prepared a sensory bin of dry noodles with traditional festival colours seen throughout Lunar New Year celebrations. Red symbolizes good fortune, happiness and vitality while yellow symbolizes harmony, warmth and strength. Another classroom led a circle time with a storybook to explain the importance of the snake, and then created painted snakes. While we also saw a Lunar New Year dinner setup in a dramatic centre, complete with (pretend) traditional Chinese food.

Representation matters among all cultures, ethnicities, religions and humans living in this world. We're proud to create a safe space for everyone at LCCC, and want to ensure that people see themselves in our hallways and our classrooms, when they walk through the door.

Wishing everyone a joyous and prosperous Lunar New Year, filled with learning, celebration, and the warmth of community. May the year ahead bring happiness, good fortune, and meaningful connections for all!
